Raw talent time for Queensland filly Sagaronne in Moonee Valley debut

TOBY Edmonds will not care if exciting filly Sagaronne does not add to his blistering early season tally at Moonee Valley on Saturday, as long as she shows she is on target for her big spring assignments.

Edmonds, one of the form Queensland trainers, has three runners at Doomben on Saturday but he is in Melbourne supervising Sagaronne’s first-up tilt in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes.

“She was a bit raw as a two-year-old and still is,’’ he said.

“So we wanted to get down here early and get her used to this way of going because all of her main goals are in Melbourne.

“I am keen to run her in the Vase here (on Cox Plate day), so this race was a good chance to get some experience at the track.

“She trialled really well without being asked to do a lot and I think she will run well from the barrier (1), but this is just the first run of what will be a long preparation.”

Edmonds would love to have a crack at the VRC Oaks with the daughter of Real Saga.

“Her mum Lasoron got out to a trip and this filly relaxes well enough to get over ground,’’ he said.

“Whether she’s a stayer long-term, we don’t know, but most of them tend to handle it as three-year-olds.’’

Edmonds admitted he was pleased to see Sagaronne’s J.J. Atkins conqueror Press Statement run so well in the Run To The Rose last week.

“Press Statement went great,’’ he said. “He showed a better turn of foot than our filly in the JJ but she was gaining on him in the last 60m.”

Edmonds has made a flying start to the season, with his nine winners in August providing the stable with one of the best strike rates in the country.

“Things are getting to where we want them to be,” he said. “We had 55 winners two seasons ago but last season we were able to have a bigger impact in town (25 city winners).

“It’s been a big help with Segenhoe coming on board, and we’re getting better-quality horses to work with.”

Initially Edmonds’ association with Bill Mitchell started the Segenhoe association and the famous breeding nursery’s owner, Kevin Maloney, has really embraced the move, sending ever more well-bred gallopers north.

Edmonds rates Mr Epic as his best hope of building on the new season tally at Doomben on Saturday.
