Ladbrokes backs those who back themselves
The 2019 Spring Racing Carnival unofficially begins in Melbourne this Saturday, with the first feature weight-for-age race of the new season, the 1400m Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes, set to run at Caulfield. The day will see the start of the 2019 Spring Campaign for a number of racing stars, including the first-up assignment for early Cox Plate favourite Mystic Journey, as well as evergreen nine-year-old Hartnell, and two-time Group 1 winner Kenedna.
With the Group 3 Vain Stakes and Quezette Stakes, along with the Listed Regal Roller Stakes also featuring on the card, it’s no wonder punters can’t wait for what will be a cracking Saturday at Caulfield.
If you have the vision, Ladbrokes has the value, offering an extra 30% on top of fixed-odds across more than 20 thoroughbred, greyhound and harness races this weekend. With an extra 30% on top of the fixed prices quoted, you’ll get real value for every runner, paid as cash, not bonus bets, in all races listed below.
The only thing better than picking a winner is getting your pick at a top price, so head on over to Ladbrokes and back yourself.
This week’s races:
Saturday Thoroughbreds Randwick-Kensington R1-4
Saturday Thoroughbreds Caulfield R1-4
Saturday Thoroughbreds Devonport R1-2
Saturday Thoroughbreds Newbury (UK) R1-3

4-year-old Godolphin gelding with a terrific career record of 8 starts for 5 wins and 2 placings.

Godolphin has always had a big wrap on this horse ability wise, but he’s always been immature. Didn’t race until he was a 3-year-old but instead of throwing him into 3-year-old Group racing he was nursed through his grades, to help him mature without being tossed into the deep end.

Now as a rising 5-year-old the penny has finally dropped and he’s having his first go a stakes grade here in the listed June Stakes. It was obvious to see in his barrier trials that he was finally ready to fulfil his big potential.

Watch his brilliant trial effort coming into this campaign below.

He returned to racing May 25 in a 1100m open class handicap at Randwick where he was sent out a hot favourite.

Jockey Rachel King who rides him again here took him right back to the tail from an outside gate. Despite spotting them a big start on the turn as well having to duck and weave back to the inside to get clear running, one he finally saw daylight he sprouted wings and charged home to beat the very smart Heart Conquered. His last 600m was 9.3L faster than average (32.86 seconds – fastest last 600m of the whole day). It was a huge win. Check it out below.

This is the toughest test of his brief career to date but he’ll undoubtedly cope with the rise in class. James Cummings has earmarked him as a possible Group 1 / Group 2 winner come to Spring and this is merely another stepping stone on his way to that elite level of racing. Barring bad luck he’ll be too good for this lot and even more confidence building is the fact he’s drawn well and will be able to settle handier this time.

JUST WINS!

One of Australian racing’s toughest campaigners, Godolphin’s eight-year-old will be looking to add a fifth Group 1 crown to his bulging trophy cabinet. A strong second placing in the inaugural All Star Mile showed that the old boy still has what it takes to mix it with younger and perhaps more fancied rivals.

Just one of many stars in the Chris Waller mega-stable. Has won over the mile at Group 1 level in each of the last two Melbourne Cup Carnivals. These include the Cantala Stakes in 2017 and the Empire Rose Stakes in 2018. Has what it takes and knows how to get it done at the highest level. Drops back from 2000m to 1600m which Waller has done many a time to win a big Randwick mile. Terrific in Australia Cup, that form is superb. Ran the fastest last 800m/600m/400m/200m in the Group 1 Epsom carrying the exact same weight of 53kg. Goes on top at a great each way quote.

Chris Waller’s seven-year-old gelding is something on an enigma, often being difficult to get a line on. Last win was the 2018 Wagga Cup at Listed level, and before that a city win at Caulfield a further twelve months back. Comes into the Doncaster first-up from a spell.

High rated by Chris Waller (he would know!), with the trainer marking this five-year-old mare as a potential Group 1 winner. Fared poorly in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic, finishing well down the field, but is generally a very consistent type who cannot be discounted.

One of Australian racing’s perennial bridesmaids! So Si Bon is a regular starter in high-quality racing but unfortunately is simply a non-winner. He’s saluted the judge just twice across a 36-race career (including zero wins from twelve Group 1 starts). Having said that, he did have success relatively recently when winning the Listed Lord Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

A high-quality filly from the Lindsay Park stable. The three-year-old comes into the Doncaster with a lightweight and has had a very consistent preparation. Has finished second at Group 1 level in both her last two starts, both by less than half a length. The Doncaster will be a tough task, but she could just be due.

This Edward O’Rourke trained son of Sebring lived up to his impressive trial performances by winning on debut at Rosehill in February 2018, and in doing so lowered the boom on Godolphin’s juvenile colt Wagner. The colt was then well beaten in the Group III Pago Pago Stakes before getting back on track with a decent run at Rosehill when he was never on the track but was beaten less than 2 ½ lengths by Irukandji. O’Rourke has always felt the 1400m of the Group I Inglis’ Sires would be an ideal race for the youngster and that race has been his main autumn Sydney target in 2018.

JOCKEY: MARK ZAHRA

4-time Group 1 winner who somehow is still very much an “under the radar” commodity going up at $8.00 with Bet Easy Boosted Odds.

Huge 1st up in Newmarket Handicap carrying the massive 58.5kg top weight. Finished 5th only 1.5L off the winner Sunlight, who he meets in the rematch here weighted 4kg better at the weights under WFA. Another horse who beat him to the line in the Newmarket lining up here is equal early favourite at $4.00 Godolphin’s, Osborne Bulls. OB was 0.7L in front of SAL at the finish of the Newmarket, but importantly SAL gets a 2.5kg weight swing at WFA, which will make all the difference.

The barrier trial (see below) where both Santa Ana Lane competed in at Randwick on March 29 was very impressive from both horses. But SAL was lengths behind OB in the run and has beaten him home lengths as such I can absolutely say that SAL is airborne! No knock OB, his trial was good. But SAL’s trial was absolutely monumentally huge! One of the best official race trials I’ve seen since Lankan Rupee did something very very similar in 2013 before coming out and winning this exact race is devastating fashion by 3 or 4L! They just don’t trial any better than SAL did.

$8.00 on Bet Easy Boosted Odds is a massive price. I’ve no doubt he should be half that. Yes it’s one of Australia’s premier Group 1 races of the season and the quality of the 11 horse field reflects that, but I think it’s been clear for 6-12 months now that SAL is Australia’s best sprinter and the MAY be the world’s best – we’ll know that if he wins here and goes to Royal Ascot for what would be a world championship title bout between it and Godolphin superstar Blue Point who before the TJ Smith is run holds to #WBS (World’s Best Sprinter) title as we’ve come to know it!

Winx primed for Chipping Norton Stakes

Chris Waller says what you see with Winx is what you get and he expects to see the same in the Chipping Norton Stakes as he has the past 30 times she has been to the races.

The champion will be out to win Saturday’s Group One Chipping Norton (1600m) at Randwick for the fourth successive time, equalling Tie The Knot’s winning sequence from 1999 to 2002.

Her trainer is not taking a win for granted but knows as long as he gets her to the track fit and well, she will do the rest barring bad luck.

“What you see is what you get with her. She is just a class act,” Waller said.

“People are understanding how hard it is to win 30 in a row.

“You don’t do it by being the best horse on one day but by being the best over three or four years.

“She has overcome track conditions, barrier draws, slow starts, wide runs you name it – that’s Winx.”

asianconnect88

The mare claimed her 30th successive win in the Apollo Stakes on February 16, beating the gallant Happy Clapper, winner of last season’s Epsom Handicap–Doncaster Mile double over the famous 1600m-course at Randwick.

The Waller stable is likely to supply most of the Chipping Norton field.

“We will nominate Patrick Erin, Egg Tart, Unforgotten, Libran, Brimham Rocks, Winx and might back up with D’Argento,” Waller said.

D’Argento finished last of 11 runners in Saturday’s Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield, 6-1/2 lengths from the winner Avilius.

asianconnect88

The Chipping Norton is expected to be the third last time Winx will grace the track with just the George Ryder and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in her diary before she is retired.

“I haven’t started counting down the days but I am counting down the runs,” Waller said.

“I’m just trying to have her the same as she has been the last 18 months, from her third Cox Plate onwards really.

“I doubt she can be even better.

“She hasn’t changed a lot. She is still dominant.

“Unless something is there to test her we will see the same horse as last preparation.
