GODOLPHIN SILKS.jpeg

THIS 3 YEAR OLD FILLY IS AS BIG A BLUE BLOOD AS THE COLOUR OF THE GODOLPHIN SILKS THEMSELVES. SHE’S SIRED BY CHAMPION RACEHORSE AND SIRE LONHRO OUT OF THE EXTREMELY TALENTED GROUP 1 WINNING RACE MARE, REGAL CHEER.

SHE COMES INTO THIS RACE UNDEFEATED A WINNER OF 2 RACES FROM 2 STARTS.

ON DEBUT IN JULY, IN A 2 YEAR OLD FILLIES MAIDEN OVER 1100M AT WYONG (SLOW 6 TRACK RATING) SHE HAD A HORROR RUN IN TRANSIT FROM A WIDE GATE AND WAS 3 & 4 WIDE WITHOUT COVER, UP ON THE SPEED THE WHOLE WAY.

SHE DIDN’T HANDLE THE TIGHT WYONG HOME TURN AND WOBBLED BADLY WHEN CORNERING. WHEN SHE FINALLY BALANCED UP ABOUT 100M OUT FROM HOME, THERE WASN’T MUCH GAS IN THE TANK BUT SOMEHOW SHE FOUND THE GREAT TENACITY THE FIND AND STICK HER HEAD OUT AND WIN ON DEBUT.

THE RUNNER UP WHO CHARGED HOME AFTER HAVING A LOVELY RUN BACK IN THE FIELD, MISS BENETEAU, HAS SINCE GONE ON TO REALLY FRANK THAT FORM, RUNNING A VERY NARROW THIRD IN THE $100,000 ROSEBUD STAKES AT ROYAL RANDWICK DURING THE SPRING CARNIVAL.

SHE THEN JUMPED STRAIGHT INTO A MID-WEEK CITY RACE AT CANTERBURY, OVER 1250M IN A 3 YEAR OLD FILLIES, BENCHMARK 66 GRADED RACE.

SHE JUMPED VERY WELL USING HER EARLY PACE TO SETTLE IN THE BOX SEAT ON THE HEAVY 8 TRACK. SHE TRAVELLED BEAUTIFULLY IN THE RUN THE WHOLE WAY (CLEARLY HANDLES THE GOING VERY WELL JUST LIKE MUM!) BUT WHEN THEY TURNED FOR HOME SHE WAS MOMENTARILY POCKETED, BEFORE JOCKEY BLAKE SHINN QUICKLY SWITCHED OFF HEELS BACK TO THE INSIDE.

SHE HAD NO FEAR IN TAKING A NARROWISH INSIDE RAILS RUN AND LOOMED UP, SWEPT PAST THEN WENT AWAY FROM THE SHORT PRICED FAVOURITE FROM THE WALLER YARD, OVERSTEP TO WIN BY 1.5L. 3RD, 3.1L OFF PRECAUTIONS WAS THE PORTELLI TRAINED ZAFINA.

THE FORM BEHIND HER OUT OF THE EASY WIN HAS BEEN EXCEPTIONAL!

RUNNER-UP OVERSTEP WENT OK IN A GROUP 2 RACE THE NEXT START AFTER, BEFORE GAINING BLACK TYPE WITH A LUCKLESS 3RD IN THE LISTED CROCKETT STAKES AT MOONEE VALLEY ON COX PLATE DAY. SHE’S SHOWN TERRIFIC SPEED / TALENT ALL ALONG BUT WAS NO WHERE NEAR A MATCH FOR PRECAUTIONS!

3RD PLACED GETTER OUT OF THE CANTERBURY WIN OF PRECAUTIONS WAS ZAFINA. AT HER NEXT STAT SHE JUMPED SHARPLY UP IN GRADE INTO THE GROUP 2, 3YO-F, 1200M SILVER SHADOW STAKES AT ROYAL RANDWICK. SHE SETTLED A LONG LAST IN THE SMALL FIELD OF 9, BUT RAN HOME VERY WELL IN THE STRAIGHT TO FINISH 5TH BEATEN 5L, BEHIND THE ULTRA TALENTED OMEI SWORD WHO LOOKED CERTAIN TO WIN MULTIPLE SPRING GROUP 1’S BEFORE GETTING INJURED. SHE THRASHED THEM ALL BY 3.5L. BUT ZAFINA FINISHED ALONGSIDE BOTH BARACELLA & QUICK FEET WHO HAVE BOTH BEEN PLACED SINCE IN GROUP 2 COMPANY.

AS YOU CAN SEE THE FORM OUT OF BOTH OF PRECAUTIONS’ TWO WINS IS NOTHING SHORT OF SUPERB! IT’S GROUP 1 & GROUP 2 QUALITY FORM.

SHE TAKES ONLY A VERY MINOR STEP UP IN GRADE HERE RESUMING AT ROYAL RANDWICK ON BOXING DAY, INTO AN OPEN 1200M 3YO BENCHMARK 70 GRADE RACE. IT’LL BE THE FIRST TIME SHE’S TAKEN ON THE BOYS AND SHE’LL BE ASKED TO CARRY 57.5KG, BUT DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF A COUPLE OF LAST START WINNERS REPRESENTING GOOD STABLES, IN MY OPINION SHE HAS LENGTHS ON THEM ALL. SHE’S DRAWN THE EXTREME OUTSIDE, 8 OF 8, BUT IN THE VERY SMALL FIELD AND WITH THE TERRIFIC GATE SPEED SHE HAS SHE’LL BE ABLE TO CROSS AND LEAD ON THE FENCE OR AT VERY WORST SIT OUTSIDE THE LEAD, I CAN’T SEE HER BEING TRAPPED WIDE UNDER ANY SCENARIO IN SUCH A SMALL FIELD.

SHE’S TRIALLED TWICE IN READINESS FOR THIS FIRST UP ASSAULT AND BOTH HER TRIALS HAVE BEEN RIPPERS UNDER THE RIDING OF JAMES DOYLE WHO ALSO TAKES THE MOUNT IN THE RACE, SO HE’LL KNOW HER WELL. SHE’S BEEN HEAVILY RESTRAINED IN BOTH TRIALS BUT HAS STILL RUN ON VERY WELL IN BOTH, ESPECIALLY HER LATEST EFFORT WHEN 2ND IN THE TRIAL A FORTNIGHT AGO.

THE SKY REALLY IS THE LIMIT FOR THIS FILLY AND I HAVE VERY LITTLE DOUBT IN MY MIND SHE’S A GROUP 1 QUALITY FILLY AND WILL WIN MULTIPLE GROUP RACES BEFORE HE ONLY YOUNG CAREER IS DONE.

SHE’LL PUT THESE AWAY EASILY FOR MINE AND BRING UP A HAT-TRICK ON WINS AND REMAIN UNDEFEATED.

I’M SHOCKED BY THE PRICE THEY’RE BETTING OF $4.00, I THINK THAT’S HUGE OVERS. I’VE GOT HER RATED A GENUINE $2.10-$2.20 CHANCE ON PAPER AND FORM RATINGS, SO THE $4.00 IS A LUXURY….I’D BE GETTING ON ASAP BECAUSE SURELY SUCH A GOOD THING CANNOT LAST LONG!

GOOD PUNTING!

Brazen Beau flops in July Cup

Australian colt Brazen Beau has flopped in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket running a disappointing 7th in the 1200m feature.

3 year old colt Muhaarar won the race by a nostril starting a 2/1 joint favourite, sprouting wings late to just nail 25/1 outsider Tropics on the post. Following on from his devastating win in the Gr1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Sent out joint 2/1 favourite, Brazen Beau reefed and pulled the whole first 600m of the race with James Doyle simply unable to settle the star Aussie sprinter having his last career run. He faded out badly the last 100m to finish in 7th spot.

That brings down the curtain on a dual Group 1 winning career for the Chris Waller trained sprinter. He won the 2014 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington & the Newmarket Handicap at the same course and distance earlier this year.

Godolphin purchased the colt earlier this year off Grant Morgan’s Ontrack Thoroughbreds Syndicate, with 37 separate owners, for a huge figure allegedly some $20 million.

The English trip wasn’t a complete disaster for Brazen Beau, running a close up 2nd in last months Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot behind Undrafted.

Lee Freedman import fails in German Derby

SHIMRANO, bound for the Lee Freedman stable, finished a disappointing 11th in the 2400m German Derby at Hamburg on Monday.

Freedman tweeted that the Australian connections who were at the track were critical of Adrie de Vries’s ride after the $2.90 favourite settled too far back in a race dominated from the front.

Freedman has to decide if Shimrano will have one more run in Europe before coming to Australia.

Brazen work pleases Waller

CHRIS Waller was on hand to watch Brazen Beau work at Newmarket on Tuesday in the lead-up to Saturday night’s July Cup there and was pleased with what he saw.

“It was really just maintenance work. We don’t need to improve him. We have just got to keep him happy and keep the speed in him,” Waller said.

Brazen Beau was ridden by his July Cup rider, James Doyle. “We know we’ve got the horse good enough. He just needs a good draw and luck in running,” Waller said.

“If he gets that, I’m sure he will be there at the finish.”

Veteran King of the Jungle

RISING 10-year-old Youthful King on Tuesday recorded his fourth win in the 1350m Jungle Juice Cup, Cessnock’s most famous race.

Youthful King, trained by Jeremy Sylvester, also won the race in 2011, 2014 and 2014. It was an 11th Jungle Juice Cup for jockey Robert Thompson and an eighth for Sylvester.

Warrnambool chief quits

WARRNAMBOOL Racing Club chief executive John Green has resigned, saying he had no choice after losing the confidence of the club’s board.

Handicapper off to Dubai

HANDICAPPER Neil Jennings will leave Racing Victoria at the end of the month and join the Emirates Racing Association in Dubai.

Jennings, who was Greg Carpenter’s right-hand man, will be in a similar role in Dubai as he will be assistant handicapper to long-serving chief handicapper Melvin Day.

Jennings has worked in handicapping in Victoria for 17 years.

Ellerton faces Epic charge

STEWARDS have charged Flemington co-trainers Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra after Epic Saga tested positive to a prohibited substance following his Tatura Cup win on April 4.

Clenbuterol, a breathing drug banned on race days, was found in Epic Saga’s post-race urine sample.

Long wait for Moloney

PATRICK Moloney will be keeping more than one eye on how Regan Bayliss performs for the rest of the season, as he thinks the battle for the Melbourne apprentices’ title could get close.

Moloney won’t ride again this season after being suspended for a month last Friday after being found guilty of careless riding in the event at Bendigo on June 11 which saw Chris Symons, Damien Oliver and Jye McNeil fall.

Moloney has 42 city winners for the season and, with seven city meetings left, Bayliss is on 32.

Brazen Beau on target for July Cup after impressive workout at Newmarket

TRAINER Chris Waller has his eyes on the prize after watching Brazen Beau go through his paces in Newmarket.

Waller was on hand when the Diamond Jubilee runner-up worked under race jockey James Doyle on the July Course. The three-year-old, who is a dual Group 1 winner in Australia, was beaten just half a length by Undrafted at Royal Ascot.

“I was happy with the workout,” Waller said. “It was pretty standard work for him, we just let him quicken up over the last 400 metres.

“It was really just maintenance work. We don’t need to improve him. We have just got to keep him happy and keep the speed in him. James seemed happy with him.

“It’s a privilege being in here in England and we have been well looked after. It was great to get a taste of the action at Ascot but a success would be so much sweeter.

“We know we’ve got the horse good enough he just needs a good draw and luck in running.

“If he gets that, I’m sure he will be there at the finish.”

Doyle will be teaming up with Brazen Beau for the first time in the July Cup as the colt now runs in the blue colours of Godolphin. The in-form jockey, who has won seven races from 15 rides this month, had already partnered Brazen Beau in a tour of the track last week.

“Brazen Beau should be fine on the track as he had a feel of it last week and has now had a second spin on it so that should be no problem to him,” Doyle said.

James Doyle to partner Brazen Beau in July Cup

27 year old Englishman JAMES DOYLE has landed the plum ride on Brazen Beau in the Darley July Cup on Saturday week after trainer Chris Waller booked the jockey to partner the colt in a piece of work at Newmarket on Tuesday morning.

The Australian challenger was partnered by Doyle, who is the number one stable rider for  Godolphin, for the first time in a four furlong exercise on the July Course this morning. The horses first look at the course where he will have his final race start on July 11.

Brazen Beau will bid to become the first horse trained outside of Europe to win the July Cup since Japanese raider Agnes World prevailed 15 years ago next Saturday.

Doyle replaces Craig Williams who partnered Brazen Beau into second in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot and came under plenty of criticism for electing to plot a solo course down the stand side of the track.
Doyle said: “We didn’t do anything spectacular but he quickened up nicely from the two and hit the line nicely. He’s a ride to look forward to, big time.”

He added: “He’s very relaxed for a sprinter, not a buzzy type and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race. Obviously you’ve got to respect the Charlie Hills horse as he spanked me in the Commonwealth Cup.”
Hills’s Muhaarar is the only horse shorter in the betting than the Australian superstar at a best-priced 7-2, with Brazen Beau at 4-1 and Mustajeeb next at 12-1.

Doyle has piloted home 14 Group 1 winners in his career to date, winning in France, Great Britain, Ireland and the UAE.

The young hoop has come a long way since 2010 when he contemplated giving up riding and doing a plumbing apprenticeship, due to the low number of rides he was getting in the UK.

The biggest break of his career came at the start of this year when he was appointed the number one stable jockey for global racing empire Godolphin, a coveted job amongst the jockey ranks. He didn’t waste anytime to repay the faith shown in him winning 2 Group 1’s, a Group 2 and a Group 3 in his first 2 months of riding for the “men in blue”.

Doyle knows every blade of grass on the Newmarket track, where Brazen Beau will attempt to become a dual-hemisphere Group 1 winner, and is sure to give him every possible chance.

Doyle’s final word on the race was

“I can’t wait for the Darley July Cup and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race.”

Hindsight is 20/20, but I can’t help but think if Doyle had ridden the colt in the Diamond Jubilee he would have already notched up a Uk Group 1 win.
