IN 2014 WHEN PREPARED BY ANDREAS WOHLER, HE BOLTED IN THE MELBOURNE CUP BY 4L, RUNNING THE FASTEST EVER LAST 200M SECTIONAL IN THE 150+ YEAR HISTORY OF THE RACE!

WE ALL KNOW HE WENT OFF THE BOIL WHEN TRAINED IN AUSTRALIA, BUT NOW BACK WITH HIS TRUE MASTER WOHLER HE’S FOUND HIS VERY BEST FORM AGAIN. IN THREE RUNS SINCE GOING BACK TO WOHLER’S GERMAN STABLES HE’S WON A GROUP 3 BY 8L, A GROUP 2 BY 4L & A GROUP 1 BY 3L.

I THINK HE AGAIN IS THE WORLD’S BEST STAYER AND KNOW IT’S OFFICIAL HE’S GOING TO THE ARC AND NOT THE MELBOURNE CUP, I THINK HE’S A HUGE WINNING HOPE AND GREAT ODDS!

2015 Cox Plate: Detailed look at the form & race replay’s of the 3 International horses

Before 2014 no international horse from Europe or Asia had been able to claim success in the Cox Plate, in fact very very few had even attempted it, and the one’s who had were often considered ‘third stringers’. But in the short space of just 12 months since Adelaide won the 2014 Cox Plate prepared by Aidan O’Brien the Irish master trainer, that’s all changed. Three top class Gr1 performed horses from Europe will line up in Saturday’s ‘WFA Championship of Australasia’ making form study a nightmare for those not wanting to troll through hours of video’s and overseas form. So we’ve done it for you and made a collaboration of the replays of the 3 horses and all their form. So sit back and have a look and see what you make of the overseas trio planning to take our prestigious WFA crown back to the norther hemisphere again.

After doing stringent form analysis and watching every replay at my disposal numerous times I’ve ranked the 3 for Saturday’s Cox Plate as follows:

1st choice.AROD

just ahead of

2nd choice.HIGHLAND REEL

decent gap to

3rd choice.GAILO CHOP

Read the evidence below in my extensive report as to why I’ve ranked them as such;

*FORM NOTE: The Dante is the major lead up race to England’s most famous and prestigious race the Epsom Derby. Always contested by some of the cream of every 3yo season. Winner of the race The Grey Gatsby would subsequently run skip the Epsom Derby to run in the Gr1 French Derby which he dominated to win by 3L, later in that same preparation he was a narrow 2nd to Epsom Derby winner- Australia in the Gr1 Juddmonte International a prestigious WFA race open to all 3yo+, before winning the Irish Champion Stakes also at Gr1 level. SO FOR AROD TO RUN THE GREY GATSBY TO 0.75L BEFORE HE EMBARKED ON A PREP THAT YIELDED 2X GR1 WINS & A GR1 2ND SAYS THE FORM IS VERY STRONG!!!

FORM NOTE: French grey champion, Solow is rated in the top 5 horses currently on the planet. He’s a 5 time Gr1 winner- The Dubai Turf, Prix D’Isphahan, Queen Anne Stakes (Royal Ascot beating worlds #2 ranked horse Able Friend), Sussex Stakes, QE II Stakes. His win over Arod was the 4th Gr1 win he’d had in a row so he was in rarefied form, and out of those 4 wins Arod margin wise, got closer than any horse he beat in those 4 races! THIS FORM IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD OF IT’S KIND. SUGGESTS AROD COULD WIN ANY RACE FROM 1600M TO 2000M IN THE WORLD ON HIS DAY.

SUMMARY OF AROD’S FORM;

He’s got close to horses such as Australia & Solow amongst others that would be odds on in a Cox Plate of any year, they weren’t / aren’t just the best of their time but the best for many years in those parts! He’s twice won over 2018m and has a narrow 2nd to The Grey Gatsby over 2092m, which is a terribly strong form line. He’s no query at the distance, he’s an on-pacer who’ll make his own luck & the form around his is world standard. If he produces his best they’ll have to be good to beat him!!!!

*FORM NOTE: This is the best form line we can get through Australian racing for Gailo chop. In this USA Gr1, Gailo Chop was 4th. 2014 Cox Plate winner was 2nd in the race beaten a neck, that was some 4L in front of Gailo Chop. 2015 Gr1 Doomben Cup winner Pornichet who was trained by Gai for this run, lead pulled it’s head off and folded to compound and finish 9th, 19L off the winner and 15L off Gailo Chop, but obviously the horse is a lot better than that, so it’s little guide. 4L off Adelaide says he’s pretty handy though.

*FORM NOTE: We get a direct line through Criterion here who he rematches again on Saturday in the Cox Plate. Here Gailo Chop lead before dropping out to be beaten 6L, while Criterion was beaten 4L. So Gailo Chop was 2L off at the finish of Criterion after leading up. It’s probably the most definitive look at the form of Gailo Chop as he’d need to improve 2L to catch Criterion and hope at the same time that horse hasn’t improved. Don’t see him making the necessary progression.

SUMMARY OF GAILO CHOP’S FORM

The easiest to assess of the international runners through his run in the Prince of Wales when 2L off the 2nd fav for the Cox Plate Criterion, dropping out after a pretty soft time in front. Also has form through Adelaide in the 2014 Belmont Derby when he was 4L off the 2014 Cox Plate winner, this was Adelaide’s final lead up too the Cox Plate so he was in pretty handy nick at the time. Neither of those efforts will win the race on Saturday in my opinion. The French form looks dynamite, but it’s very hard to get a line on, and in reality might not be as strong as it reads on paper. Run behind Solow was good, but Solow cantered past him with plenty left in store and still won easily. Compare that too Arod’s run behind Solow, where Arod really made the super-star French grey sweat it out and dig deep into his locker to overcome him. Gailo Chop has done enough to be competitive but I’d doubt he’s the winner unless he improves sharply.

The same as Adelaide last year, Highland Reel is only a 3yo by his native northern hemisphere breeding time. But in Australia he’s categorised as a 4 year old having been foaled well before our local 3yo’s but months after our 4yo’s. So he doesn’t get the big weight relief our local 3yo’s do.

SUMMARY OF HIGHLAND REEL’S FORM

Has avoided the best horses around in Europe at 3 in the most part asides from two runs in the Irish Derby & Irish Champion where he was safely held both times. Although 4L off Golden Horn over 2011M maybe good enough to win a Cox Plate as Golden Horn is rated as the world’s best horse this year along, winning the Arc leading all the way and only tasting defeat once when finishing runner up, in his 8 starts, he’s equal with USA Triple Crown Winner American Pharaoh. Runs a strong 2040M that’s without doubt, does look very one-paced though if there’s a knock. But if he runs up to last start he’ll be in the mix, 4L is a pretty sizeable margin but as stated it was behind the world’s best. Poorly in at weights is a knock. When comparing him to Adelaide, their form is very much similar. Adelaide didn’t race the best often but was held when he did and he won the Gr1 Arlington race. Can definitely win, but I prefer Arod from an international perspective, not by far though.

Tulloch won the 1957 Caulfield Cup becoming the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race.
Tulloch won the 1957 Caulfield Cup becoming the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race.

FALLS IN THE CAULFIELD CUP:

  • 1885 17 of 44 horses fell at the turn into the straight, resulting in the death of jockey Donald Nicholson (considered Australia’s worst race fall)
  • 1906 7 horses

PROTESTS IN THE CAULFIELD CUP:

  • 1893 Tim Swiveller won, but was disqualified for pushing another horse out of the race
  • 1969 Nausori came in first, a protest by jockey Roy Higgins on Big Philou for interference at the furlong pole (200m) was upheld

INTERESTING STATS:

  • It is interesting to note that since 1983 no Caulfield Cup winner has won from barrier one.
The 2400m start at Caulfield is situated at the top of the straight at the home turn so there is a good 400m run before the capacity field negotiates the turn out of the straight. Horses caught wide cover plenty of extra ground because of the sharp turns so luck in running, like any big race, is critical. Gates two to five have won 10 of the past 30 Cups but the rails is a maiden during that period. But if the pace is on in the Caulfield Cup, then all runners will get their chance as the field will break up.
  • Up until the past few years the race has been strictly won by Austalian & New Zealand horses (with the only anomaly being Taufan’s Melody’s win in 1998, when he floored punters by winning at 66-1), but with the globalisation of the Melbourne Spring carnival over recent years thanks to the massive prize pools on offer, we have now had winners from all over the globe. All the Good was prepared in Dubai by Saeed bin Surour won he won the race in 2008. Dunaden, who also won the Melbourne Cup in 2011 came back and carried 58kg the victory in 2012, he was trained and bred in France. In 2014 Admire Rakti won the great race for Japan, also carrying 58kg to victory. In the 2015 Caulfield Cup there are runners from Japan, Ireland, Germany, UK, NZ & Australia taking part.
  • In 2015 the Caulfield Cup will be contested for a purse of AUS$3,000,000 which makes it the world’s richest mile & a half race that is run under handicap conditions. Runners down to 10th cash-in with the breakdown being; 1st $1,750,000, 2nd $425,000, 3rd $225,000, 4th $125,000, 5th $100,000, 6th $75,000, 7th $75,000, 8th $75,000, 9th $75,000, 10th $75,000.
  • 7 of the past 15 winners have been 4 year olds
  • 3 mares have won the race in the past 2 decades
  • No favourite has won in the last 10 years, but before that 4 favourites won in a row.

The final field for the 2015 Caulfield Cup + barriers & odds are as follows; (with 18 horses to run, there are 4 emergencies in the line-up for the 2400m classic.)

The 2015 Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud In-Depth Race Preview & Tips

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run at Saint-Cloud over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June.
History

The event was established in 1904, and it was originally called the Prix du Président de la République. It was initially contested at Maisons-Laffitte over 2,500 metres by horses aged three or older. It was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1915 to 1918. It resumed at Saint-Cloud in 1919.
The race was cancelled once during World War II, in 1940. Its original title was discarded in 1941, following the end of theFrench Third Republic. The newly named Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud was run at Longchamp (1941–42), Maisons-Laffitte (1943, 1945) and Le Tremblay (1944) before returning to Saint-Cloud in 1946.
The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud was classed at Group 1 level. It was cut to 2,400 metres in 1987, and closed to three-year-olds in 2005.
The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011. The winner now earns an automatic invitation to compete in the same year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf.

This year sees a small but select field of 9 assemble and here is our runner by runner preview & tips for the 2015 Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud;

1.FLINTSHIRE – $6.50
Winner of 4 races from 15 starts but two of those successes have been group 1’s (2014 Grand Prix De Paris & 2014 Hong Kong Vase). Has also boasts no less than 5 group 1 placing’s to go along with those 2 major success’s.

Resumed this campaign with a solid 3rd, beaten 1.9L in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs behind Pether’s Moon and arch nemesis Dolniya, who beat him into 2nd place in the the Prix Dushaan and Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic earlier in the year.

The key to him is firm footing which he’ll get here – on good rated tracks he’s won 4 times with 6 minors from 11 attempts.

A definite player in the race, he’s all class.
2.DAURAN – $201
A honest handicapper at very best. A million miles out of his depth here. Odds on pop to run last.
3.AL WAAB – $67
Group 3 / listed class horse at best and is well and truly outclassed here.
4.ALTAIRA – $201
A 7 start maiden who has only had 1 placing in those starts. Mystifies me why he’s running here. No hope.
5.MANATEE
Rising star with a career record of 4 wins, a placing and a close up 4th from just the 6 starts.
Is 2 from 2 at Group 2 level including an impressive victory last time out in the Grand Prix de Chantilly when the medium of a huge betting plunge, $2.10 into start at $1.50.

A potential super-star, but this is his acid test. I have a feeling he’ll measure right up!
6.MELEAGROS
Winner of both starts this campaign, but rises steeply in grade and is likely to find this well too tough.

7.DOLNIYA
Bolted in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan earlier in the year beating Flintshire who she meets again here.

Resumed this prep with a terrific 2nd beaten just a long neck in the Group 1 Coronation Cup across in England at Epsom.

She’s a top class mare and is sure to run a bold race, from out in front where she maps as though she’ll get an easy lead. Can cause the huge upset if there is to be one given an easy lead!
8.TREVE
Superstar mare, winner of 7 from 10 including 4 at Group 1 level. She’s campaigning to become the first ever horse to win 3 Arc’s and if her first up effort was anything to go by she’s right on track.

She bolted in the Prix Corrida on that occassion by 4 L and left no doubts in punters minds as to ho well she is going.
Can sum her chances up in 1 word. Unbeatable! She’s an out and out champion mare.
9.FEODORA
Only has 1 win to her name but that was the Gr1 German Derby at Dusseldorf last August.

Was nine lengths of Treve resuming in the Prix Corrida, and has no chance of turning the tables, but looms only as a rough place hope.
