Melbourne Cup 2016 – Field, Odds and Horse updates

We are closing in on the 2016 Melbourne Cup with just days until the running of the race that stops a nation. View our list of horses that have been ruled out of the race and the horses that are still in contention.

Updates:

25/10/2016: Caulfield Cup runner up Scottish will not line-up in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup field. Trainer Charlie Appleby said on Godolphin’s website he was happy to drop the horse back to 2000 metres given his consistent form over the distance in Britain this season.

25/10/2016: Godolphin runner Oceanographer has been a late nomination in Saturday’s Lexus Stakes field. Oceanographer sits 29th in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup and on our prediction will not make the field unless he wins the Lexus hence why Godolphin have nominated.

25/10/2016: Trainer Charlie Appleby has stated today that it is likely that Scottish will bypass the Melbourne Cup and run in the Emirates Stakes. We have changed Scottish from Likely to run to now Unlikely to run.

24/10/2016: Second acceptances were taken today with 32 horses left in Melbourne Cup contention, the biggest surprise was that Tally remains in acceptances despite John O’Shea saying he will not run in the race posing the question thathe could be a starter. He is set to run in the Lexus Stakes so a decision is likely to be made after his Lexus run.

23/10/2016: A decision whether Hartnell will run in the Melbourne Cup will be made no later than Monday but it is more than likely he will line up in the race despite the 8L defeat in the Cox Plate. John O’Shea has stated all a long that Hartnell’s best chance of a major was in the Melbourne Cup and if the horse is sound he will race.

Outs:

Scottish: The Caulfield Cup runner up will bypass the Melbourne Cup and run in Saturday weeks Emirates Stakes.

Tally was originally said to be out of Melbourne Cup contention although he remained in the acceptances on Monday so we have moved him from Out to a Maybe. He will run in the Lexus Stakes and trainer John O’Shea is likely to wait until after the Lexus to make a decision on the Cup.

MAYBES:

Howard Be Thy Name: Darren Weir has said Howard Be Thy Name will head to the Bendigo Cup before a decision on whether he will run in the Melbourne Cup or not with connections saying he will need to win the race to press onto the Cup.

Unikely to Run:

TBA

Likely to Run:

Real Love: Despite a disappointing run in the Caulfield Cup Real Love remains in contention for the $6.5million dollar race with owner Bob Peters stating she will run in the Lexus Stakes with a run in the Melbourne Cup determined on how she goes but with the booking of William Pike today it is likely she will race.

Ins:

In list order we have Jameka, Alamndin, Big Orange, Our Ivanhowe, Curren Mirotic, Hartnell, Who Shot Thebarman Wicklow Brave, Bondi Beach, Exospheric, Grand Marshal, Gallante, Almoonqith, Sir John Hawkwood, Heartbreak City, Beautiful Romance Excess Knowledge, Assign, Secret Number, Grey Lion  with the Lexus Stakes winner being ballot exempt Qewy is currently on the fringe.

Odds:

26/10/2016: Following the removal of Scottish from markets Jameka has shortened from $6.00 into $5.50 whilst Heartbreak City has trimmed up from $14 into $13.

25/10/2016: Despite there being any major news both Hartnell and Jameka have shortened in betting today with Hartnell moving from $4.60 into $4.40 whilst Jameka has been $6.50 into $6.00.

Scottish has eased slightly from $15 out to $17 with news he is likely to run in the Emirates Stakes instead.

24/10/2016: Following second acceptances Big Orange has been the notable shortener firming from $16 into $13 as has Tom Melbourne who had his odds slashed from $301 into $51. Wicklow Brave has also shortened slightly from $18 into $17. Whilst Grand Marshal has drifted back out to $34.

Hartnell remains the Melbourne Cup favourite following his second to Winx in the Cox Plate however he has drifted slightly from $4.40 out to $4.80 whilst Jameka firmed from $7 into $6.50.

Grand Marshal was the biggest firmer in markets after Cox Plate day with his odds of $51 turned into $17.

Who Shot Thebarman was also a firmer in markets $26 into $21 as was Pentathlon $101-$51 with Gallante drifting $21 out to $35 as did Excess Knowledge $31-$51.

Tulloch won the 1957 Caulfield Cup becoming the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race.

FALLS IN THE CAULFIELD CUP:

  • 1885 17 of 44 horses fell at the turn into the straight, resulting in the death of jockey Donald Nicholson (considered Australia’s worst race fall)
  • 1906 7 horses

PROTESTS IN THE CAULFIELD CUP:

  • 1893 Tim Swiveller won, but was disqualified for pushing another horse out of the race
  • 1969 Nausori came in first, a protest by jockey Roy Higgins on Big Philou for interference at the furlong pole (200m) was upheld

INTERESTING STATS:

  • It is interesting to note that since 1983 no Caulfield Cup winner has won from barrier one.
The 2400m start at Caulfield is situated at the top of the straight at the home turn so there is a good 400m run before the capacity field negotiates the turn out of the straight. Horses caught wide cover plenty of extra ground because of the sharp turns so luck in running, like any big race, is critical. Gates two to five have won 10 of the past 30 Cups but the rails is a maiden during that period. But if the pace is on in the Caulfield Cup, then all runners will get their chance as the field will break up.
  • Up until the past few years the race has been strictly won by Austalian & New Zealand horses (with the only anomaly being Taufan’s Melody’s win in 1998, when he floored punters by winning at 66-1), but with the globalisation of the Melbourne Spring carnival over recent years thanks to the massive prize pools on offer, we have now had winners from all over the globe. All the Good was prepared in Dubai by Saeed bin Surour won he won the race in 2008. Dunaden, who also won the Melbourne Cup in 2011 came back and carried 58kg the victory in 2012, he was trained and bred in France. In 2014 Admire Rakti won the great race for Japan, also carrying 58kg to victory. In the 2015 Caulfield Cup there are runners from Japan, Ireland, Germany, UK, NZ & Australia taking part.
  • In 2015 the Caulfield Cup will be contested for a purse of AUS$3,000,000 which makes it the world’s richest mile & a half race that is run under handicap conditions. Runners down to 10th cash-in with the breakdown being; 1st $1,750,000, 2nd $425,000, 3rd $225,000, 4th $125,000, 5th $100,000, 6th $75,000, 7th $75,000, 8th $75,000, 9th $75,000, 10th $75,000.
  • 7 of the past 15 winners have been 4 year olds
  • 3 mares have won the race in the past 2 decades
  • No favourite has won in the last 10 years, but before that 4 favourites won in a row.

The final field for the 2015 Caulfield Cup + barriers & odds are as follows; (with 18 horses to run, there are 4 emergencies in the line-up for the 2400m classic.)
