HURRICANE FIGHTER IS A 3YO GELDING BY SAVABEEL, TRAINED BY MICHAEL MARONEY AT HIS FLEMINGTON STABLES.

HE DEBUTED ON THE 6TH OF SEPTEMBER IN A 1009M 3YO-MAIDEN AT ECHUCA. HE BEGAN A TOUCH SLOWLY AND DIDN’T HAVE MUCH EARLY SPEED, SO HE SETTLED BACK 7TH IN THE FIELD OF 11. HE BEGAN TO GRADUALLY IMPROVE PASSING THE 600M POINT & STEADILY PICKED UP COMING ROUND THE BEND. HE TOOK A WHILE TO WIND UP BUT CLOSED OFF VERY WELL IN THE LAST 100M-150M TO GET UP AND NAB 3RD BEATEN JUST 0.95L. THE RUN WAS A PLEASING DEBUT BUT IT WAS VERY OBVIOUS HE’D BE A HORSE BETTER OVER FURTHER.

2ND UP ON SEPTEMBER 27, MARONEY STEPPED HIM UP TO A 1300M 3YO-MAIDEN AT BENDIGO. THIS TIME AROUND HE JUMPED OUT IN-FRONT AND SPED OVER FROM GATE 6 OF 11 TO LEAD SOLO DOWN ON THE RAIL.

THE ODDS-ON FAVOURITE IN THE RACE WAS THE SON OF BLACK CAVIAR, PRINCE OF CAVIAR, AND THEY PAIRED OFF OUT IN FRONT AND GOT AWAY WITH SOME CHEAP SECTIONALS. AROUND THE CORNER & INTO THE STRAIGHT THE PAIR WERE STRIDE FOR STRIDE.

ALL & SUNDRY WERE EXPECTING PRINCE OF CAVIAR TO QUICKLY PUT PAID TO HURRICANE FIGHTER. BUT HURRICANE FIGHTER FOUGHT ON DOGGEDLY AND IT WASN’T UNTIL THE LAST 100M THAT PRINCE OF CAVIAR GOT THE UPPER HAND & DREW CLEAR TO DEFEAT HURRICANE FIGHTER INTO 2ND SPOT BEATEN JUST 1.3L. IT WAS A TERRIFIC EFFORT BY HURRICANE FIGHTER TO STICK ON SO GAMELY WITH THE VERY TALENTED COLT PRINCE OF CAVIAR. PRINCE OF CAVIAR HAS TERRIFIC FORM LINES AROUND THE LEADING VRC DERBY CONTENDER, AND TWICE CITY METROPOLITAN SATURDAY GRADE WINNER SUBSEQUENTLY OF DARREN WEIR’S ~EXTRA BRUT~.

PRINCE OF CAVIAR ALSO HAD FORM AROUND SUBSEQUENT STAKES WINNER AT RANDWICK ~MICKEY BLUE EYES~ WHO HAS ALSO SINCE RUN VERY WELL IN THE GROUP 1 SPRING CHAMPION.

LONG STORY SHORT, PRINCE OF CAVIAR IS A VERY TALENTED COLT THAT WILL IN TIME MEASURE UP TO GROUP LEVEL RACING, SO FOR HURRICANE FIGHTER TO MATCH MOTORS WITH HIM FOR SO LONG INTO THE STRAIGHT IN THEIR CLASH AT BENDIGO WAS A TERRIFIC RUN.

TODAY HE RISES ANOTHER 100M IN TRIP UP TO 1400M, WHICH SHOULD AGAIN SUIT NICELY. HE’S DRAWN A TOUCH STICKY IN GATE 12 BUT IF HE CAN SHOW THE GATE SPEED HE SHOWED US AT BENDIGO HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET UT & CROSS THEM AND GET THE LEAD ON THE FENCE.

DOUG HARRISON’S 5 YEAR OLD GELDING JUDGE O’REILLY LOOKS THE HORSE TO BEAT & IS THE EARLY MARKET FAVOURITE, CRAIG WILLIAMS TAKES THE RIDE BUT IN HER ONLY CAREER START SHE GOT WELL BACK BEFORE RUNNING HOME. HOPE HURRICANE FIGHTER CAN GET A SOFT ENOUGH TIME OF THINGS IN FRONT SO THAT HE CAN DICTATE THE RACE & PUT THE BACK MARKERS OUT OF BUSINESS.

WITH NATURAL IMPROVEMENT & THE STEP UP IN TRIP I’M CONFIDENT HURRICANE FIGHTER CAN GO PRETTY CLOSE TO WINNING AT A VERY GENEROUS QUOTE OF $7.00.

Laurie charged over ‘ice’ positive

Mornington trainer Matt Laurie will face the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board to answer a charge after one of his runners tested positive to ‘ice’.

Stewards charged Laurie with presenting Shockaholic to race with ice, also known as methamphetamine, when the gelding won a maiden at Echuca on April 24.

Laurie faces a charge of breaching AR178 but stewards note the “question of contamination may be a relevant issue for consideration by the RAD Board in this matter”.

Laurie issued a statement when the positive test was announced in June suggesting the industry considers how to respond to illicit drug use by human participants.

“The Report has identified an important issue for the racing industry in respect of the use of prohibited substances by persons involved in the industry and the potential for contamination of the horses in their care,” Laurie said.

“Matt Laurie Racing looks forward to the matter being fully investigated.

“There is no reason to believe that the racing industry is isolated from the prevalence of drug use in the community generally.

“However, there needs to be further debate about the appropriate response on the part of the industry generally given its potential impact on thoroughbred racing.”

The RAD Board will hear the case on a date to be fixed.
