Went straight to midweek at Sandown (Hillside) in metro grade & was unwanted in betting blowing from 25/1 to 40/1. However the market got it all wrong!
The Shamexpress colt settled back 10/10 over the unsuitable 1000m from barrier 10 & at the 600m appeared to be going nowhere when he was 7.1L off the lead. Despite the huge start & racing greenly in the straight the colt ran on terrifically well clocking the fastest 600/400/200m splits in the race with a last 600m time 4.1L faster than the class average.
He ran a slashing 32.22 for the last 600m to be beaten just a short neck by the talented Ben Hercules of Lindsay Park.
That horse ran respectable behind Blue Diamond winner Written By in the Blue Diamond Prelude, then after his Sandown win he was just 2.2L 4th in the Rosebud Prelude at Randwick, won by the lovely colt & highly rated Plague Stone. So the form from Kaipaki’s debut was brilliant.
2nd up he was thrown right in the deep in going to a 1200 open 2yo handicap at Caulfield & having to lug 58kg on a min of 54.5kg. Again he draw the extreme outside 9/9 & again settled stone motherless last in the run. Again he raced very greenly & didn’t handle the Caulfield corner one bit.
Up front of the race the undefeated (3/3) Brutal put 5L on the field and absolutely walked in. Once the bird had flown Symons flicked the switch off & eased Kaipaki right down to a canter and he crossed the post. Fair to say he was all a bit new & green to be tackling horses of Brutals caliber at just start 2.
He was immediately tipped out to be given time to mature & now steps out from all reports as a much more furnished 3yo. He’s drawn poorly again in 7 of 9. But the expectation is that he’ll settle between midfield & 3/4’s and not snag right back to last this time.
It’s a terrible quality maiden & Kaipaki gets in beautiful at the weights with just 57kg, 2 above the minimum.
The #8 Emmy Awards is the only possible danger. It’s on debut for the Busutin / Young stable & hasn’t been sighted in public…..but she’ll have to be pretty quality to beat Kaipaki.
Ellerton & Zahra have bought the colt he for this lowly 1100m maiden for in Zahra’s words a “soft kill” to iron out bad habits & teach him to race more tractable. He’ll just been winning. Has panels on all opposition.
4th up here. 1st failed on bog track. 2nd up ran very well back on dry. 3rd up failed again but was found to be lame post race.
Gets gun jockey Clark on & huge class drop back to provincial 1100m maiden.
Gets suitable dry track. Hard to beat but not going silly.
Heavily backed and bolted in first up, eased right down late to still score by 2.8L. Looks to have come back in terrific order & is a great price here. Should take some beating.
4 seconds from 5 career starts but has been plagued by niggling injuries his whole career.
Hasn’t been seen on track for 358 days that’s nearly a whole year & comes here without official trial against his name.
Without knowing how fit he is it’s hard to get a real gauge on his but in this pathetic 6 horse field if he’s 65% fit he’ll finally break his duck. Despite being a 5 horse maiden the stable have always had an opinion of him in fact he’s only run once in maiden grade before this. He’s run in 3 no metro win races at Ascot for 2 seconds & a 5th, 1 maiden & 1 $60,000 2yo open handicap where he was 2nd as well.
Class will get him home as I’m sure he’ll be fighting fresh to charge to victory over the 1000m.
Caused us a hell of heart break 1st up when looked all over a winner in the straight only to fail picking up leader by a nostril hair. Was off 221 day break that and came in without a trial and fitness just told late. With the run under her belt & step up to 1300m Lachie King With the 3kg claim only needs to find cover from awkward alley and she’ll atone today.
Was a maiden til til prep but has really turned a corner. Shanghaied out 1st up to lead but was pestered whole way. It & 2nd horse race 6-7L clear of rest. Was entitled to stop but didn’t and won in slashing time.
2nd up nothing went right from barrier and was planted 3-4 deep the trip, no cover. Did an enormous job to dig in late and win driving finish despite trip.
Out to 1100m won’t worry her & from 5 Shooter McGruddy can take a sit if he wants or jump straight to front if she begins like first up. Always back mares in form & she’s in white hot form!
Has sat on pace and bolted in both starts this campaign including a 3.3L romp this track / trip first up & a similarly dominant 3L win 2nd up at Launceston on slow ground proving he handles going. Amazingly drops 2kg on that win to 57kg. Newitt sticks. Best of good things you can load up.
Has been terrific in 2 runs back across the border in sa. Arguably should have won both. 1st up over 1200 was badly held up before finally getting out & charging to the line to miss by a nose. 2nd up got well out of ground in pedestrian run race where leader went a snails 🐌 pace 11L slower than the class average. LAURE ME IN flew home 4L quicker than the class average but it was a mathematical impossibly for him to win.
