Hugh Bowman tightens grip on Sydney jockeys’ premiership
HUGH Bowman is the hot favourite to claim a third Sydney jockeys’ premiership after rival James McDonald revealed he is unlikely to ride here again this season.
McDonald, the Sydney premiership leader on 85.5 wins, is leaving for England soon to ride over the northern hemisphere summer for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin stable.
Bowman (80 wins), Blake Shinn (77.5) and Tommy Berry (63) are the only other jockeys in title contention and all three are riding at Canterbury on Wednesday.
The TAB’s Matt Jenkins said Bowman is in the box seat to add to his premiership wins in 2008-09 and 2011-12.
“Hugh Bowman has tightened his grip on the Sydney jockeys premiership with news James McDonald is heading overseas,’’ Jenkins said.
“Bowman was $2 favourite before but is now into $1.65, with Blake Shinn next at $2.30 and Tommy Berry a $12 chance.
“We have had some thrilling finishes to the jockeys’ premierships in recent years and this one looks no different.”
