ZIGGY WILLIE looks set to peak tomorrow at Rosehill with the John Sargent-trained galloper third-up in the Bedford CA Handicap (1500m).
The four-year-old resumed with a strong third behind one of his rivals here in Happy Clapper and then produced a couple of good gallops before running second at Rosehill over 1350m.
He was still half a run or so short last time but the improvement Ziggy Willie has shown since is substantial.
He reeled off a slick 36.9s for his last 600m on Tuesday and will go into Saturday’s race a fitter horse. I also note that Happy Clapper hasn’t raced since they last met. If Ziggy Willie can’t beat him on Saturday, I doubt he ever will.
ROLE MODEL runs in the same race and her most recent gallop was as good as her workout leading into her first-up run. She’s ready for the extra trip but a wide gate makes life tough for her.
FRESPANOL is just flying and can win the Festival Stakes with Thomas Huet, who has a brilliant record aboard the five-year-old gelding, to do the steering.
He ran 36.3 for his final 600m on Tuesday and is rock-hard fit for his toughest test this campaign. The step back up to 1500m will suit him.
PHEIDON’S gallop on Thursday suggested he’s just come right at the right time and even he will start big odds in the Festival, he’s worth throwing into your multis.
CENTE PIVOT is getting fitter but he’ll take another run or so before peaking. Sargent is allowing him to come along slower than last time so that he can have him peaking for the Magic Millions raceday in January.
Tonight at Canterbury keep an eye on DR SYKES. He put in a good gallop ahead of his recent Canterbury failure.
When he came back to scale last week he had a good blow – stick with him.
RIVER WILD – the horse that turned heads at Kembla on debut before getting beaten in stakes company at Rosehill – is coming along really well.
He and English have both worked stylishly over the past fortnight and will be worth following when we next see them.
