1.QUEST FOR MORE $5.50 & $2.10

Is 25th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry as we speak, so with just 1 spot to climb he’s nearly assured a run with at least 1 runner almost certain of falling out from inside the top 24. Trained by Roger Charlton at Wiltshire in England.

6 wins & 7 placings from 18 starts, the 5 year old son of Teofilo bred in Ireland is only just starting to hit his very top form.

Last start he was 2nd beaten a 0.5L in the Gr2 3218m Goodwood Cup at Goodwood by Big Orange. (Video of race: http://www.racinguk.com/video/watch/2015-qatar-goodwood-cup) Caulfield Cup runner up & Ascot Gold Cup champion Trip to Paris was 3rd in the race finishing behind Quest for More so that form really stacks up here.

The start before that in a heritage handicap class race, the Northumberland Stakes at Newcastle he lowered the colours fair and square of Max Dynamite who is rated a 15-1 Melbourne Cup chance by a convincing 1.25L. No excuses the runner up. Again that form ties in very well as Max Dynamite in his subsequent run came out & brained Trip to Paris by 11L & Big Orange by 14L in the Gr2 Lonsdale Cup at York over 3200m.

Has 59kg and is drawn very ‘sticky’ in gate 16, but looks a superior stayer to most of these if he can just get luck, and isn’t totally hopeless heading towards the Melbourne Cup either.

Great chance here and represents top value.

2.DANDINO $3.40 & $1.60

Formerly trained by Marco Botti in the UK but is now in the astute care of Darren Weir at Warrnambool, where he has been for about 12 months now.

He came to Australia when prepared by Botti for a Spring Campaign and was terrific! He was a slashing 2nd in the Caulfield Cup of 2013 behind Fawkner, flashing home with alarm bells flashing from the tail to miss out by 1.3L. Following that run in the Melbourne Cup he again got a mile out of his ground and in a Melbourne Cup not run fast, he had no winning chance but worked home terrific vs tempo to finish in 5th berth beaten just 3.5L behind Gai’s Fiorente.

He’s had 4 runs this campaign and each has been pleasing improving every time seen. 1st up in the 1400m Memsie where he was always going to be run of his feet he started at 80-1 and as the price suggested they were way too slick, he couldn’t keep up. Into the Makybe Diva then where he started 100-1 but he was much improved over the mile even though it was way too short, running home well even though finishing 11th. Really stamped himself as being back to best 3rd up in Underwood getting to 1800m. He ran home hard up the inside to be 2.9L off winner Mourinho, running the fastest last 600m & 400m splits in the race. Mongolian Khan ran 4th in the race & of course has since dominated a Caulfield Cup, his sectionals were 4th behind Dandino’s. Last start in the Turnbull he was ridden upside down and was wide, on speed. He stuck on terrific though going down just 1L too Preferment who is a highly fancied Cox Plate & Melbourne Cup chance. Amralah was 7th, it’s since won the Herbert Power and is highly fancied in the Melbourne Cup. It was 0.8L behind Dandino.

This horse has a real sense of timing that’ll peak in the Melbourne Cup and run very well with this race the final tune-up run. Having said that he’s ready to win getting out to 2400m now & with 57.5kg and gate 9, he gets things to suit.

Should be very hard to beat.

2013 Caulfield Cup – Dandino 2nd

2015 Memsie Stakes – Dandino 15th

2015 Makybe Diva Stakes – Dandino 11th

2015 Underwood Stakes – Dandino 8th

2015 Turnbull Stakes – Dandino 4th

3.BONFIRE $9 & $3

Gai Waterhouse trained so we know one thing, he’ll be rock hard fit! Has had a very long campaign with 6 barrier trials before and in amongst 5 race starts. Has been on-speed in all five runs and won the Grafton Cup 3rd up. Up in class latest two for the Hill Stakes & Metropolitan and ran well both times. 39th in order for Melbourne Cup which he’s fully paid up for so with 52kg will need to win this & get a penalty and or win the Lexus and get the exemption to make the final 24 in the Melbourne Cup.

Will make own luck on speed with 57kg from gate 2, and is progressing well enough to prove a major contender and be hard to peg down.

Good chance, we know he’ll be the one to catch which is worth a lot!

4.GUARDINI $8 & $2.70

Ex French galloper having his first start for hall of famer Lee Freedman & brother Anthony. Has had just 10 career starts and is an out and out stayer.

Won a 2400m Gr3 for 3yo’s at just 2nd race start at Chantilly, although I don’t know any horses it beat that day. Led all the way though and defied chasers and on tapes it does look a lovely horse with a very nice running action.

Was 4L off The Grey Gatsby 3rd race start in a Gr1 over 2400m at Longchamp, although beaten 15L in total by winner.

2014 Cox Plate winner Adelaide beat him by 6.5L in a 2400m Gr2 at Longchamp. We know how well Adelaide went on, so 6.5L off him is pretty handy especially in the infancy of his career.

Won a 4yo+ Gr2 2400m race at Cologne, 1st up as a 4 year old and the runner-up that day was an open Gr1 winner at 3yo at Cologne looking at his form and ha been running well ever since without winning in Gr1 / Gr2 company, so it mustn’t be too bad.

Was transferred from France to the USA before his last run and obviously things weren’t right that day or with his condition after the move as he was 8th of 8 beaten 30L in the Gr1 2400m Sword Dancer at Saratoga.

Now he comes here with no public trials, or jump outs….It’s purely guess work. What we do know is the horse does have ability! It stays all day, handles good going, he’s drawn well & has 57kg. He’s prepared by a hall of famer as well so he will have the horse ready to run I’m sure. He’s 38th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry so like Bonfire he’ll need to win here & get a big enough penalty or win the Lexus on Derby Day to make the final 24 in the Melbourne Cup. That further suggests he’ll be ready to fire fresh, which he has done historically, doubt they’ll be sending him around for the fitness, but that’s just my assumptions.

Can win, wouldn’t shock but your backing it on faith! None of the form ties right in apart from that 1 run behind Adelaide…On trust!

8 year old now days, and while he’s been a terrific horse his best days are probably behind him. Has won 1.2 million $ in stakes.

Lead up runs only fair. 15-1. Happy to rule out with plenty of yound guns firing on all cylinders against him.

6.ALMOONQITH $16 & $4.60

Gr 3 winner over 2800m in Dubai, who is know trained locally by hall of famer David Hayes & partner Tommy Dabernig.

Looks very one paced and while he’s been ok in 4 Australian runs including a 4L 7th in the Metrop last start behind Magic Hurricane, it’s hard to see him finding what he’ll need to, to be winning as this rates very much tougher than the Metrop even though not a Gr1 like it was.

Haven’t seen enough to put my money on him here.

Trained by Ed Dunlop in England who also has Trip To Paris & champ Red Cadeuax out here. Very interesting runner this!!

What’s he doing out here??? I’m sure Ed didn’t convince connections to spend $50,000 on a holiday for the horse so he must have a good race in mind for it.

It’s 3 runs since joining Dunlop have been awful, but throw back to his form in France when prepared by Melbourne Cup winning trainer of Dunaden, Alan Ryoer Dupre, and it’s world class. He was 2nd just 1.5L off world beater Flintshire in the Gr1 2400m Grand Prix Du Paris at Longchamp…. Flintshire’s form doesn’t get much better anywhere in the world….he ran 2nd in the 2014 Arc behind Treve, 2nd in the USA’s richest turf race the Breeder’s Cup Turf, won Hong Kong’s best 2400m race the Hong Kong Vase on international day, won the Gr1 Sword Dancer in the USA and last start was again 2nd in the Arc. In fact he’s rated 9 in the world on the International Ratings Chart, the equal of Brazen Beau, so he’s very very good!!

Manndawi would only need find something very close to his form that day and he’d beat them silly here well down the weights. Is he going as well ? Not a recent form but at 30/1 I’m very happy to have a small each way punt on him finding his best, I won’t lose big but I’ll collect big if he does what he can….I just can’t help but thinking a horse with such terrific form from the past must have been showing something like his best to warrant a very expensive outlay by connections and trainer…..Each way all day!! Could just blow them away if found best..!

So it’s the internationals for me here, the toppy just needs luck and he’s the class animal that’ll take plenty of beating. Dandino is building toward a win this could be it…Gotta back both! Manndawi each way as a wild card! Where there’s smoke there’s fire….and this smelss smokey to me!
