The 150th Irish Derby, Curragh, Ireland

Winner: JACK HOBBS

The question on everyone’s lips after Jack Hobbs’ 5L romp in the Irish Derby is – just how good is the undefeated Epsom Derby winner Golden Horn?

In the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York he beat Jack Hobbs by 3L, then backed that up beating him again in the Epsom Deeby, this time by 4L. The Irish Derby field was of very good quality and the fact Jack Hobbs thrashed them with ease, can only lead you to believe that Golden Horn is a mega-star.

Bookies agree, he’s pressing champion mare Treve for favouritism for the Arc!

The Takarazuka Kinen, Hanshin, Japan

Winner: LOVELY DAY

Lovely Day broke his group 1 duck at attempt 6, holding off flying stablemate Denim and Ruby who herself was also looking for her first group 1 win at  attempt 13.

The story of the race though was Gold Ship, the odds-on favourite who reared simaltaneously as the gates opened, missing the jump by a clean dozen lengths and putting paid to his chances of bringing up a hat-trick there and then.

Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Saint-Cloud, France

Winner: TREVE

Champion mare Treve notched up Group 1 win number 5 at just start 11, and again showed she’s dead on target to make history by winning a 3rd consecutive Arc, come October…No horse in the proud history of Europe’s greatest race has ever come close to achieving the feat.

Pretty Polly Stakes, Curragh, Ireland
Winner: DIAMONDSANDRUBIES

Diamondsandrubies won a thrilling edition of the race narrowly tipping over race favourite Legatissimo, who has been beaten an inch at both her last two starts now at group 1 level. Ribbons was also very close up in 3rd.
