US Horse of the Year California Chrome may miss his engagement in Wednesday’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot due to a bruised foot.

Alan Sherman, assistant trainer to his father Art Sherman, reported that California Chrome’s right foot had been packed in ice and poulticed.
‘He won’t run unless he is 100 percent,” Sherman said.

Sherman said an assessment of whether last year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winer was responding would be made on Tuesday.

California Chrome has been in the UK for more than six weeks. He has been training at Newmarket since he finished second in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan on March 28.

California Chrome won his only previous start on turf in the G1 California Derby at Del Mar last year.

The winner of nine of his 18 starts, California Chrome was set to take on a star-studded international field on Wednesday that includes Australian G1 winner Criterion.
