Ray Thomas — The Daily Telegraph
SATURDAY racing comes to you today from Rosehill Gardens and Flemington. Here’s all the last minute tips and info from Daily Telegraph racing editor Ray Thomas.
Weather: Cool, partly cloudy day with a slight chance of a morning shower and a forecast top temperature of 19c.
Track: Soft (6)
Weather: Cool, partly cloudy day with a forecast top temperature of 17c.
Track: Good (4)
Rail: 6m out
BE WARY: The Rosehill surface has been racing well of late although it has been desirable not to be hard up on the fence. The rail remains in the true position after last Monday’s meeting where generally about five horses off the fence was the best going. Flemington’s good 4 surface should provide an even track today although it might be preferred to be away from the inside in the straight course sprints.
THE BEST BET: Shards (race 1) should get punters away to a winning start. He has only raced twice, being placed in each including his very game effort over today’s course and distance two weeks ago when he pushed Press Statement to the line. Press Statement then won at Group 1 level at Doomben last week. Shards is short enough now in betting but he should win.
THE NEXT BEST: Ecuador (race 6) controlled the race in front and dominated his rivals scoring by more than two lengths over 1800m. It was an impressive return to form for this promising galloper who has struck peak form and fitness after just three runs back from a long spell. Talented, lightly-raced gelding with a high-cruising speed that gets his chasing rivals off the bit a long way out. He is up to 60.5kg and stepping up to 2000m but he still looks too good for this field.
VALUE BET: Straturbo (race 5) resumes today but he is a noted first-up performer. He trialled nicely here at Rosehill last month and was due to resume in the June Stakes last week but had to be withdrawn. Reportedly worked well this week and racing over his preferred 1100m trip. Class horse of the field who gets in just 4kg over the limit after the claim. Provided the track is not too wet he is over the odds at $11.
THE WHISPER: Mirage (race 4) should have won at Randwick but veered to the outside and allowed Beyond Thankful to get through inside and win. Mirage has since scored a runaway seven lengths barrier trial win and has backed that up with some brilliant track gallops since his costly loss at Randwick three weeks ago. He completed his preparation for today’s race with a 600m workout on the dirt at Randwick on Tuesday morning, stopping the clock at 37s flat including a final 200m sectional of 11.2s. Significant gear change with blinkers coming off and a nose-roll going on. He could easily blow this lot away.
THE BEST BET: Northroza (race 3) won at Geelong and Sandown late last year then resumed after a six-month break with a closing third to More Radiant over the Flemington 1200m trip. She just found the trip just short of her best but impressed with her finishing effort. She steps up to 1400m today and from her soft draw she should get the run of the race. Looks very hard to beat.
NEXT BEST: Husson Eagle (race 6) finished strongly to win at Caulfield over 1000m when resuming and backed that effort up with a close fourth to Nicoscene at Group 2 level at Morphettville last start. Kept fresh since and back to the Flemington 1000m course where he has finished second at his only two previous starts. In a tough race he makes plenty of appeal. Under-rated but consistent sprinter and will be in the finish.
VALUE BET: St Catejan (race 7) was a Bendigo maiden winner three starts back and has run well in both runs since. He took on older horses at Bendigo last start and ran on strongly from back in the field to finish fourth behind Darragh. The step up to 2000m today will suit and he is an improving young galloper. Certainly worth something each way at $26.
THE WHISPER: Anatina (race 5) resumes today but she has been primed with two easy Cranbourne trials in recent weeks. Talented mare with a very good first-up record and she excels along the Flemington straight track, winning over 1000m and 1100m previously. She hasn’t raced since October but all reports are she is flying in her work and pleasing the stable. Ready to win.
