After a long wait Royal Descent got back into the winner’s list in taking out the G2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and sent her spring rivals a warning.

Royal Descent Horseform hasn’t been able to win since her dominant Oaks display back in her three-year-old season but she has run a series of top-class efforts since then and her return to the winners circle today might be the most deserved in Australian racing.

She stalked a strong pace set by Zaratone Horseform with key rival Pornichet Horseform working forward to sit outside him.

Pornichet launched his bid after balancing up, and briefly looked to have the race in his keeping, but Royal Descent quickly went from stalking to launching, reeling in Pornichet and winning running away.

Messene Horseform got into third with 40-1 outsider Beaten Up Horseform grabbing fourth ahead of Kermadec Horseform who was strong through the line and looks on track for a big spring.

“She is the last horse I would call a non-winner. I know that’s what her form suggest but you wouldn’t get a horse try as hard as her. She has been gallant in so many big races, almost breaking weight carrying records in Epsom’s,” said trainer Chris Waller.

“She is a superstar. It is the best she has come back in terms of the way she looks. She looks so strong. I thought that might be against her but she has trialled well, she has had the two trials and they’ve both been good. She is just a class act.

“She is in for a good prep. It is a good way to start and a few of her stablemates were hitting the line good at the end as well.”

“The George Main is ideal. The Epsom, for $1million we’ll look at it but she would just get so much weight.

“I said to Gerry just then we would use Epsom Day whether it be the Turnbull or Epsom to decide where we go, whether we go further or whether we come back for a Myer.”

Waller was pleased with the return of Kermadec.

“I thought he was good. He was a good five or six lengths off Royal Descent turning for home and he got to the line good. His last 50m was very sharp,” he said.
