5.MIGHT AND POWER 1997
Became the first horse to ever lead all the way and win the gruelling 2 mile staying test. All after getting slugged 2kg after winning the Caulfield Cup by 7 lengths. I backed him…thought he’d been beat! In fact I was sure!
Won the 2006 Derby at Flemington in one of the all time great performances. Lloyd accepted for him to back up on the Tuesday, but scratched him. Patience paid off as the grey became the first horse since the immortal Phar Lap to win the VRC Derby at 3 then the Melbourne Cup at 4.
Never thought I’d see a horse sit 3 and 4 wide the entire journey of a Melbourne Cup and still win. He did.
2.MAKYBE DIVA 2004.
“….what no mare has ever done before”. Her 2nd Melbourne Cup win setting a weight carrying record for mares and becoming the first mare to repeat her previous years win.
1.MAKYBE DIVA 2005.
….”a champion becomes a legend”. No horse ever has or ever will again win 3 consecutive Melbourne Cups. She carried 58kg to do so, that’s +2kg vs WFA, so the equivalent of a male winning with 60kg+. Forget the haters who bag the ‘track watering’, they conviniently forgot to mention that the race was run on a Good 3 surface after all the comotion anyway. Greatest win I’ve seen at the races under conditions.
